Bonsai and kusamono are Japanese art forms that use plants and other organic material to create beautiful, indoor arrangements. An Edmonton man is using these techniques, but with native Alberta plants. CBC’s Mark Connolly spoke with Abbas Mancey about his living art and why he loves it. Pioneers in the Native American community as well as the field of space exploration include Nicole Mann and John Herrington.

More From the Los Angeles Times

For the first 500 or so years of colonial contact, there’s a difficult story of loss of land, stealing of land, murder, and an attempt by the government to exterminate entire races of people. It’s only been in the last 20 years or so that tribal communities have gained the resources to design from within their communities, to have a say in what’s happening. So the urban design, planning, and community-building work that I do is all part of a new way of asserting self-determination and sovereignty. One way is by branching outside of the traditional role of the architect or urban designer. We encourage you to buy authentic and not the cheap knock-off designs that appropriate the culture. We are a premium Native American brand that is driven by Indigenous art and culture.

Taking Cultural Preservation to a New Dimension

An example of an invasive plant in Illinois is the Amur Bush Honeysuckle (Lonicera maacki). Amur Bush Honeysuckle is widespread across the Midwest, altering ecosystems and impeding the growth of native plant species. An introduced species is one that humans have relocated to a new area, intentionally or accidentally, making it non-native. For example, many introduced species enhance the visual appeal of residential landscapes, while various crop and livestock species, such as wheat, cattle, and European honeybees, offer nutritional value. The first words that must be clearly defined in a conversation about invasive species are native and non-native. It is a priority for CBC to create products that are accessible to all in Canada including people with visual, hearing, motor and cognitive challenges.

Feeling recognized by those who speak your language, whether that be word or bead, carries a lot of weight. But I’m getting ahead of myself, without addressing this spirit in the room. As an independent publication, we rely on readers like you to fund our journalism and keep our reporting and criticism free and accessible to all.

History books, timelines, and collections can be limiting in their often narrow viewpoints. As many people currently grapple with what it means to be racially and culturally aware and not to appropriate from other cultures, it is vital that BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) scholarship is visible. As a people who have been subject to colonization, subjugation, and attempted erasure, too many histories of Indigenous, Native American, and First Nations people are lacking, especially in design. The scene from Reservation Dogs, which aired on Hulu, a major, internationally distributed streaming service, presents a relatable moment in contemporary Native American life on an Oklahoma reservation. Right there on Bear’s wall were posters I was able to already know and recognize.

It is important to note that species native to a specific location are also technically considered established. However, the term "established" is useful as it helps differentiate between non-native species that rely solely on human care (like crop species) and those that can survive, reproduce, and spread to new areas independently. For example, red maple (Acer rubrum) and Norway maple are found in the United States.

In a prototype he conceptualized this year called Not My HUD House, the architect explores the features that are staples of indigenous lifestyle that his home failed to include, from a porch and a place for a fire to a view of the sky. She is an eclectic multi-media artist, mother, veteran and advocate for sustainability. In the 1870s, Brig. Gen. Richard Henry Pratt was a proponent of “Americanizing” indigenous communities and started government boarding schools that mandated cultural assimilation. He also provided art supplies to Kiowa, Comanche, Cheyenne and Arapaho prisoners of war at Ft. An inevitable aspect of educating non-Native society is disrupting the concept of authenticity; that is, what is considered “authentic” Indian art.

As a Dakota artist, my work embodies the love, patience, resiliency and beauty of my ancestors’ legacies and the land that has provided since time immemorial. I use the traditional styles of Dakota beadwork, quillwork and ledger art to be a seed from which my vision grows. I have a passion for traditional Dakota floral styles and designs and have been committed to preserving and sharing these art forms and lifeways.

Getting his start adorning Vans and Converse shoes with modern Coast Salish art, this self-taught Nooksack artist founded popular lifestyle brand Eighth Generation in 2008 as an ethical alternative to the ubiquitous “Native-inspired” products on the market. Deloria’s critique set in motion a series of legal and ethical reforms, including the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), which was passed by Congress in 1990. The law mandated that archaeologists, museums, and federal agencies consult with tribal communities when managing their material heritage. NAGPRA sets an important precedent for how to respectfully interact with tribal communities, whose rights have been systematically abused and ignored for centuries. Urban Outfitters’ assertion that “Navajo” is a generic term disregarded the fact that Navajos are a real group of people with their own political system and culture—not a brand. Furthermore, the company’s initial approach ignored the diversity, meaning, and importance of designs for Navajos and, by extension, many other tribal communities. DinĂ© designer Amy Denet Deal left her corporate fashion gig in Los Angeles to launch her clothing brand, 4Kinship, which has a brick-and-mortar shop in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Scott is part of the Nlaka’pamux Nation and a member of Boothroyd First Nation and takes inspiration from Native design and Pacific Northwest culture when choosing shapes to use in his own work. He’s also interested in gender expression and fluidity and the idea of taking traditional fashion aesthetics and giving them a modern twist.

Agreeing on terminology helps to clearly communicate so that everyone can understand what invasive species are and why there is concern about them. As bird enthusiasts, we shared with Rob our desire to have plants that would attract migrants and resident birds to our garden. The design didn't disappoint as we had buntings and grosbeaks stop by in the Spring and now have Warblers wintering near our residence. Rob also maintains an exceptional list of installers who share Robs attention to detail. Join the email list to make sure you don’t miss out on limited edition gear and the latest news.
